Smash Bros. Tournament

The only Smash Bros. tournament I ever entered was in an actual dojo. I’d heard about it from a reputable acquaintance; he used to work at the Bulk Barn and charge us 1/3 the price for full shopping bags of candy.

When my friends and I arrived we realized we were by far the oldest there. We were in university and they were all high school kids. Nevertheless, a small handful of them were fairly skilled and actually beat a couple if us. But really, they were kids.

Prior to the tournament we all had a a quick self-defense lesson. The dojo was mostly using this tournament as a recruiting session, trying to get kids who liked fighting games to sign up to learn something real.

I don’t think they recruited anyone.

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed that tournament, but it’s hard to feel proud about beating kids, even if some of them were pretty good.

I wanted to play the best. I wanted my world tournament.

Every year EVO comes to Montreal. Maybe it’s not too late?

Haven’t heard of EVO? This video tells you everything you need to know:

Hunter x Hunter

Hunter x Hunter is the best TV show in existance. I’m sure you object to that, for various reasons, but I’ll try to explain why.

hunter x hunter

Gon and Killua

First off, I’m not what you’d call a rabid anime fan. So if you hate anime and are preparing to reject it solely on that fact, know that I wear a similar hat. I’ve seen my share of anime, which is to say a lot from pre-2006. I kind of stopped watching all anime after that, when many shows had the exact same undertone: two people like each other, but they’re too embarassed or stupid to say it, so there’s a bunch of awkward situations where they almost touch and some fan service followed by nose bleeding and eventually it all ends but they still aren’t together. It’s not really my cup of tea.

But, out of this tangled mess of tired anime stories rose a few amazing series, including many people’s old favorite, Evangelion, and other series like Full Metal Alchemist, Hikaru no Go, and Cowboy Bebop. The point I’m trying to get across here is that you if you don’t like anime, you will like Hunter x Hunter because it doesn’t have any of the nonsense that usually makes people turn away from anime.

As a show, Hunter x Hunter posesses all that makes you love The Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Harry Potter and World of Warcraft. Yes, I threw a video game in there. The show is fantasy based, in a world I would dream to live in. The characters are easy to love, well developed, and also surprising in their various quirks. There is magic and lore, technology and abilities, and a story that wraps it all up like a Christmas gift. The first time I watched Hunter x Hunter, I felt something I hadn’t felt since I first watched A New Hope as a child. There’s a new world, with things that aren’t possible in our mundane lives, and you want to see as much of it as possible.

Hunter x Hunter was originally developed as an idea based on “hunting”, that is to say, gathering items. This is why I threw World of Warcraft in there. WoW is basically just collecting gear and tuning it, and that same vibe is present in Hunter x Hunter, but less obsessive and more fun. It’s also not like Pokemon, in the sense that it’s not childish and each episode is part of a larger arc, not that I dislike Pokemon. But it needed to be said.

Now, when you inevitably decide to watch it, please don’t get the crap Funimation put on the American networks. Stick to the original Japanese version with voice actors who actually are able to voice act, and use subtitles. Anything less is an insult to your life.

StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm Teaser Leaked

Oh Blizzard. So leaky. But you can’t fail me. Even if you attempted to fail me you could still have the money I would spend on food.

There’s a StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm teaser trailer that appeared online and shouldn’t have. Seems like GameTrailers posted it live and now the Blizzard fans are swarming. It’s since been removed from GameTrailers and re-posted as a YouTube video, which also was removed. You can view its currently living DailyMotion video here for now.

Spoiler: If you don’t want to know what’s coming, or who is in stop reading now and don’t click play. It is but one name, repeated two different ways.

Flickchart

When you love someone you want to share things with them you know they’ll enjoy. Even if that means you risk hurting them. And if you love movies friend, I love you too. That’s why I’m going to tell you about http://www.flickchart.com.

Remember in The Social Network when Zuckerberg makes “Facemash?” For those he missed the movie what he does is take two freshmen girls, put them side by side on a web page, then asks you to click on which one you think is hotter. Flickchart does that with movies. You can search movies by genre, title, decade, and then rank each new selection against your list.

Some advice:

  1. If you have an addictive personality, this is going to consume you for a few days.
  2. If you have problems picking one movie over another, or one type of movie over another (IE Anchorman vs. Schindler’s List) make a rule for yourself like, “which movie do you feel more for?”
  3. Pick with your heart

My rankings are still a work in progress, but I learned a few things about myself I didn’t know. For one, I really love Training Day. I knew I liked it, but it wasn’t until I had to mash it up against other movies that I realized how much.

When you start getting serious, you might find yourself gaming the system. What the ranking system seems to do is pick the same movie posiition from the list to figure out where new movies belong. I call it the feel-good movie barrier. Mine was 2009’s Star Trek. It seems like there should be a more random way to do it. You shouldn’t be forced to test movies against position 21 every time in order to determine if something should belong in the top 20. Fortunately, the site has features that allows you to mashup the top 50 or 100 as often as you like.

It consumed my life for a day and a night. And now I give it to you. Feel free to add me as a friend on the site. I love looking at people’s top 20s.
